Dry biochar added directly will briefly steal nitrogen; pre-soaking in diluted worm leachate or mature compost tea for 10–14 days fills the pores with beneficial bacteria. Sources include Kadoorie Farm, which occasionally releases biochar from its wood‑waste pyrolysis project, and a few online retailers that import coconut‑shell biochar. For containers, activated charcoal from aquarium supply shops on Tung Choi Street serves a similar purpose.
