O·PARK1, Hong Kong’s pioneering organic resources recovery centre on Lantau, now diverts over 80,000 tonnes of food waste annually into a nutrient-dense soil improver called Food Waste Compost. This locally produced amendment, alongside a growing number of community-sourced alternatives, is quietly reshaping how the city’s gardeners condition their plots without relying solely on imported peat or synthetic fertilizers.

The Local Compost Landscape

Hong Kong’s soil amendment market has traditionally depended on bagged products shipped from Canada, Europe, or mainland China. Today, at least four distinct local input streams are available. The Environmental Protection Department’s O·PARK1 output is sold in bulk to agricultural cooperatives and occasionally retailed under the Eco-Green label at selected outlets. Separately, the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden produces a high-carbon biochar from yard waste at its Tai Po facility, priced at approximately HK$45 per kilogram when available. Community composting networks on Peng Chau and in parts of the New Territories offer smaller batches of fungal-dominated leaf mould. Finally, spent mushroom substrate from farms in Yuen Long and Sheung Shui—primarily from Pleurotus species cultivation—enters the supply chain via landscape contractors and a few specialist retailers such as Brighten Florist & Garden in Prince Edward.

What’s Actually in It?

The nutrient profile of local food waste compost varies by feedstock, but analysis from O·PARK1 reveals a typical NPK ratio of approximately 2-1.5-1, with organic matter content exceeding 45 percent. Critically for Hong Kong’s compacted urban soils, the product contains a high fraction of slowly decomposing lignin and cellulose from fruit peels, spent tea leaves, and vegetable trimmings. This structural carbon improves aggregate formation in rooftop planter mixes that would otherwise slump into anaerobic layers. The biochar from Kadoorie Farm, made from rambutan wood and invasive Leucaena leucocephala, has a pH of 8.2 and a surface area exceeding 300 square metres per gram, which boosts cation exchange capacity in the granitic residual soils common across Kowloon. Spent mushroom blocks, meanwhile, supply active mycelial fragments that can help colonise sterilised potting media and suppress soil-borne pathogens such as Rhizoctonia solani.

Matching Amendments to Hong Kong Plants

Not all local amendments suit every garden scenario. Food waste compost works best for heavy-feeding ornamentals such as Bougainvillea glabra and Rosa chinensis grown in large terracotta pots, where its slow-release nitrogen aids repeat flowering during the long summer photoperiod. For acid-loving species that struggle in Hong Kong’s alkaline tap water—including Gardenia jasminoides and Camellia sasanqua—blending biochar with pine-bark fines rather than food waste compost prevents pH spikes. Spent mushroom substrate is particularly effective when incorporated at 20 percent by volume into raised beds for leafy greens under 50-percent shade cloth, as it maintains the cooler root-zone temperatures preferred by Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis.

In ground-level border plantings where compaction from monsoon rain is a constant threat, the coarser fractions of sieved food waste compost (particles above 8 millimetres) act as a long-term macropore builder around the roots of Ficus microcarpa hedges. For balcony gardeners growing Hemerocallis fulva or Chlorophytum comosum in sub-irrigated planters, a three-centimetre top-dressing of local leaf mould derived from Liquidambar formosana litter suppresses evaporation without wicking salts upward.

Application Rates for Balconies and Beds

Over-application of high-carbon amendments can immobilise nitrogen as microbial populations surge. For food waste compost, a single incorporation of 3 litres per square metre into the top 15 centimetres of soil in March is sufficient for the entire summer growing season; a supplementary 1.5-litre side-dressing in July benefits repeat-blooming Lantana camara varieties. Kadoorie Farm’s biochar requires pre-charging with liquid fish emulsion or diluted worm tea before use, otherwise it will initially scavenge nutrients. A ratio of one part biochar to 10 parts soil by volume, charged for five days, works reliably for Ixora coccinea in east-facing exposures. Spent mushroom substrate should be composted for an additional six weeks before use to allow remaining straw to stabilise, or it can be applied immediately as a 50-millimetre mulch beneath Murraya paniculata topiary where slow fungal breakdown is desired.

Avoiding the Salt Trap

A recurring problem with some locally produced composts is elevated electrical conductivity from seafood processing scraps or soy sauce residues. Hong Kong gardeners managing coastal plantings of Crinum asiaticum or Plumeria obtusa may already deal with salt spray, but adding high-salt compost can tip soil osmotic potential beyond 4 dS/m, a level that stunts even moderately tolerant species. Before committing to a large purchase, conduct a simple seedling bioassay: sow five seeds of fast-germinating Raphanus sativus in the amendment and compare radicle length after four days against a peat-only control. If growth is reduced by more than 40 percent, either leach the product thoroughly with rainwater or blend it with washed river sand at a 1:1 ratio for use around mature Tabernaemontana divaricata.

Additionally, many Hong Kong growers unknowingly double-amend their soil by using nutrient-rich reject water from kitchen washings on top of solid compost. This practice, while well-intentioned, can accelerate phosphate build-up that ties up iron and manganese, leading to interveinal chlorosis in Hibiscus syriacus. A single, measured dry amendment applied in spring remains the more predictable strategy.

Where to Source in the City

Procuring local soil amendments takes a little detective work. The Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre publishes an updated list of retailers stocking O·PARK1 compost; as of this summer, you can find it in 15-kilogram sacks at Plantaholic in Mong Kok and at the Yuen Long Agricultural Cooperative store on Sai Yu Street. Kadoorie Farm releases biochar in limited seasonal batches—email registration is essential. Spent mushroom substrate is often given away free by the truckload from farms along Ngau Tam Mei, but most require self-collection and a vehicle with a covered bed. For those without transport, Prince Edward Flower Market stall number 34 occasionally repackages it into 10-litre bags for city dwellers. The community compost from Peng Chau is distributed at the island’s second-Sunday farmers’ market, and it works exceptionally well for repotting Epipremnum aureum in office planters.

Before you reach for another bale of sphagnum peat from a far hemisphere, consider that Hong Kong’s own waste stream now offers amendments tailored to the city’s alkaline water, typhoon-driven leaching, and tight planting spaces. Your next repotting session could close the loop between the bin and the balcony.


One figure who has quietly chronicled this shift is Kwok Chi-hing, a retired agricultural officer who began experimenting with O·PARK1 compost in 2018 at a small plot near Tung Chung. Kwok, now 68, maintains a detailed log comparing the performance of food waste compost against a synthetic NPK control across 12 common vegetable species. His records show that for Brassica juncea var. foliosa (mustard leaf), the food waste compost treatment produced a 14 percent lower initial yield in the first 30 days, but required only half the supplementary watering during July’s dry spells. The root mass in the compost-treated beds was visibly denser, with more secondary roots probing deeper into the granitic subsoil.

Kwok’s most instructive data point concerns Ipomoea aquatica (water spinach), a crop notoriously sensitive to high-salt conditions. In his 2022 trial, plants grown in O·PARK1 compost with an electrical conductivity of 3.2 dS/m showed tip burn after 21 days, a symptom absent when the same compost was first leached with 15 litres of rainwater per cubic metre. That finding has since influenced how several New Territories farmers pre-treat their bulk deliveries. “The compost doesn’t fail; the application method fails,” Kwok remarked during a 2023 talk at the Hong Kong Horticultural Society. He now advocates for a two-stage approach: a pre-planting incorporation of 2.5 litres per square metre, followed by a leach with an overhead sprinkler set to deliver 10 millimetres over 45 minutes before any seed goes in.

Kwok also tested the fungal survival rate of spent mushroom substrate from a Sheung Shui Pleurotus farm. After six weeks of additional composting in perforated bins, he found that active mycelium persisted in 68 percent of samples kept below 30 degrees Celsius, but fell to 12 percent when temperatures exceeded 35 degrees for more than five consecutive days. His advice, now passed informally among gardeners at the Yuen Long Agricultural Cooperative, is to store the blocks in shaded, elevated pallets during July and August. “If you see white threads when you tear the bag open, you’ve still got biology worth putting in the soil,” he told a group of balcony growers last autumn. His log sheets, photocopied and stapled, circulate at the cooperative’s Saturday morning gatherings—a low-tech corrective to the glossy marketing that sometimes accompanies commercial soil amendments.
