Most urban Hong Kong gardens grow in one of three substrates: decomposed granite (common on the south side of Hong Kong Island and outlying islands), volcanic-derived clays (prevalent in the New Territories), or imported fill that contains concrete fragments, brick dust and subsoil. The fill almost always registers a pH above 8.0 because of free lime from cement. Decomposed granite is acidic but lacks organic matter and collapses under traffic. Volcanic clay swells when wet and bakes hard in the dry season, restricting root penetration. A simple pH test kit, available at most Mong Kok garden shops for around HK$40, tells you whether your soil is alkaline or acid, and a jar test—shake a spoonful of soil with water and let it settle—reveals the proportions of sand, silt and clay.

Organic Matter That Actually Persists

Rapid decomposition is the chief obstacle to building humus in Hong Kong’s subtropical climate. Compost made from woody material and leaf mould breaks down more slowly than food-waste compost. Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden sells a mature, wood-based compost at its Lam Kam Road shop that improves both sandy and clay soils without vanishing in a single wet season. On Lantau, Peninsula Organic Farm in Mui Wo produces a rich, manure-free compost from local green waste. For containers, well-rotted leaf mould from deciduous street trees—often available free from estates after autumn leaf drop—makes an excellent moisture-retentive top dressing for shallow-rooted species such as Impatiens walleriana and Begonia semperflorens. Avoid uncomposted rice husks sold cheaply in Fanling; they tie up nitrogen as they break down and can turn a planter hydrophobic when dry.

Well-rotted horse manure, bagged and steamed, is stocked by Brighten (Kwai Chung) and several shops on Flower Market Road. It builds water-holding capacity in sandy soils and opens up tight clay, provided it is dug in at planting time—not merely spread on the surface, where crusting forms under the strong sun. Apply no more than 2 cm depth worked into the top 15 cm of soil; thicker layers ferment anaerobically during the humid months and damage roots of perennials such as Hemerocallis hybrids and Clivia miniata.

Structural Amendments for Potted Plants and Small Beds

Perlite and pumice are the workhorses for container drainage in Hong Kong, where a sudden thunderstorm can waterlog a pot within minutes. Both are inert, pH-neutral and sold in large sacks at the Prince Edward Flower Market. For succulents and cacti—such as Euphorbia milii and Sansevieria trifasciata—mix one part pumice to two parts commercial potting compost. For acid-loving shrubs grown permanently in pots, including Camellia japonica and Gardenia jasminoides, substitute coarse horticultural grit (from Yee Lee Garden Centre in Yuen Long) for pumice to add weight that prevents tipping in exposed high-rise settings.

Never add sand to a clay-based garden bed. The combination forms a cement-like mass that bakes rock-hard during October’s brief dry spell. Gypsum (calcium sulphate) is the safe structural amendment for clay because it flocculates the tiny particles without altering pH. Apply 0.5 kg per square metre and water in well. Gypsum is stocked by Royal Garden (Fanling) and can be ordered from online suppliers based in Sheung Shui. For small in-ground beds surrounded by paving, drill deep holes with a 30 cm auger before backfilling with a mixture of existing soil and coarse pumice; this mimics a vertical drain and stops the planting hole turning into a sump during a typhoon downpour.

pH Correction Without Guesswork

Alkaline fill is the single biggest limitation in housing-estate landscapes and roadside planters. Iron and manganese deficiencies show up as yellowing between the veins of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and Ixora coccinea. Long-term correction requires elemental sulphur, not aluminium sulphate, which can reach toxic levels with repeated use. Flower Market shops sell powdered sulphur in 1 kg tubs; incorporate 35 g per square metre to lower the pH of a clay fill from 8.0 to 6.5 over a two-month period. For a quicker result in containers, replace 20% of the potting mix with fine-grade coco peat (rinsed, buffered) from Growing Smart in Mong Kok. Coco peat retains acidity without the sustainability concerns of peat moss, though it holds less nutrient and must be supplemented with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.

Natural hillside soils in the New Territories, particularly those derived from volcanic tuff around Lam Tsuen, can be surprisingly acid—testing below pH 5.0. Iron-loving ornamentals such as Rhododendron simsii and Camellia hongkongensis thrive here, but vegetables like Brassica chinensis (pak choi) suffer unless dolomite lime is worked in at 100 g per square metre six weeks before planting. Kadoorie Farm supplies a finely ground dolomite lime that also delivers magnesium, the core of chlorophyll.

Biology First: Amendments That Support Life

Hard, compacted soil is often biologically dead. Anecdotal reports from rooftop gardeners in Sai Ying Pun confirm that worm castings, applied as a 1 cm layer each autumn, increased earthworm activity in large planters within a single season. Pure worm castings are expensive but concentrated; dilute them 1:10 with mature compost before spreading around Bauhinia × blakeana and Murraya paniculata. Several hydroponic shops in Sham Shui Po now stock effective microorganisms (EM) in liquid and bokashi form, though field trials by the Hong Kong Gardening Society found the benefits are marginal unless the soil already contains adequate organic matter—EM is a catalyst, not a substitute for compost.

Biochar has attracted interest after successful trials on landslide scars above Po Shan Road. When made from locally abundant bamboo offcuts and charged with compost tea for two weeks before incorporation, it persists for decades and reduces leaching of nitrogen during the rainy season. A ready-to-use, inoculated bamboo biochar is now sold by a social enterprise in Yuen Long’s industrial area. Mix it at 5% by volume into beds destined for heavy-feeding plants such as Musa cultivars and Hedychium coronarium. Plain charcoal briquettes from barbecue shops offer none of these benefits—they frequently contain petrochemical binders that stunt root growth.

When an Amendment Is Not the Answer

No amount of gypsum or compost will fix a waterlogged planter sitting on a solid concrete base. Before spending money on amendments, check that each container has a drainage hole of at least 2 cm diameter and that it is raised on pot feet so water can escape. For in-ground beds where water stands after a moderate storm, the only durable solution is a French drain or a sump, not deeper digging. The Labour Department’s code of practice for landscape maintenance, often applied to public housing estates, now specifies a gravel sub-base under all beds adjacent to retaining walls—a recognition that Hong Kong’s monsoon rainfall overwhelms amended soil alone.

Finally, soil testing can prevent costly mistakes. The Government Laboratory’s soil fertility service accepts samples from the public via the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for a modest fee; results include pH, organic matter, and major nutrient levels. Interpret the report with a Hong Kong-specific guide, since overseas recommendations rarely account for the rapid mineralisation rates typical of a humid subtropical climate. Amending the soil becomes a straightforward prescription rather than a hopeful experiment, and the garden—whether a few square metres in Po Lam or a sprawling Sai Kung hillside—responds with the vigorous growth that only a truly living soil can support.


The late Dr. Lawrence K. C. Chau, a soil scientist at the University of Hong Kong from 1965 to 1998, documented that Hong Kong’s urban fill soils contain an average of 12% by weight of construction debris—concrete fragments, brick shards, and mortar—a figure that has only risen as the city’s rebuilding cycle accelerates. His 1987 paper, “Soil Properties and Plant Growth in Hong Kong,” remains the most cited local reference on the subject, and his field notes reveal a persistent irony: gardeners who diligently add organic matter to these alkaline fills often worsen the problem. The free lime from cement fragments reacts with fresh compost to form insoluble calcium humates, locking up both the calcium and the organic carbon. A simple sieve test—passing soil through a 5 mm mesh before any amendment—removes the offending rubble and reduces the pH-buffering capacity of the fill by up to 0.8 units, according to follow-up trials at the Kadoorie Farm Soil Laboratory. Mong Kok’s Yuen Fat Garden Supplies sells a stainless-steel sieve of this gauge for HK$85; the investment prevents years of frustrated lime-and-compost cycling.

Chau’s research also identified a local anomaly in volcanic clay soils: their high iron oxide content, common in the weathered tuff of Sai Kung and the Clearwater Bay peninsula, binds phosphorus into an unavailable form, creating a deficiency that mimics nitrogen shortage in young Citrus × limon and Gardenia jasminoides. Standard NPK fertilisers worsen the condition by adding more phosphorus that becomes locked up. The remedy, well known to the vegetable farmers of Kam Tin, is to apply a phosphorus-solubilising bacterium inoculant—several of the hydroponic supply shops in Sham Shui Po now stock Bacillus megaterium in freeze-dried form—or to incorporate finely ground rock phosphate (available from Brighten in Kwai Chung) at 50 g per square metre, which releases phosphorus slowly as the local soil’s acidity fluctuates. Neither method provides an instant fix; both require three to six months of consistent moisture to show results. Gardeners expecting a quick response should instead switch to foliar feeds containing mono-potassium phosphate, which bypasses the soil entirely for the duration of the growing season.
