Urban garden soil rarely fares any better. Building sites leave behind a mix of subsoil, crushed concrete and construction sand, while long-term planting beds in public housing estates often compact into an airless crust. Any serious gardener in the territory must therefore treat soil amendment not as an occasional luxury but as the foundation of healthy growth. The challenge is knowing which amendments genuinely improve Hong Kong’s specific conditions and which are a waste of money or even harmful.

Understand What You Are Correcting

Before buying any product, establish two baseline facts about the soil in your particular plot or planter. A simple jar test—shaking a scoop of soil with water and letting the layers settle—will reveal the approximate ratios of sand, silt and clay. Hong Kong soils often lean towards silty sand in the New Territories floodplains or heavy red clay on the upland slopes. At the same time, invest in an inexpensive pH meter or test kit, available at the Prince Edward Flower Market and garden supply shops in Mong Kok. Most local subsoil falls between pH 5.0 and 6.0, but concrete dust and lime leachate from walls can push balcony planter soil well above pH 7.5.

These two measurements—texture and pH—determine which amendments are needed. Adding the wrong material, such as peat moss to already acidic soil while ignoring severe compaction, simply replaces one problem with another.

Organic Matter: Materials That Actually Last

The single most beneficial amendment for Hong Kong gardens is stable organic matter. It opens up clay, binds sandy particles, feeds soil microbes and buffers both moisture and temperature. Gardeners in the territory have several reliable local sources.

Well-rotted compost is the gold standard. Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden sells mature compost produced from its own plant waste, and several community gardens in the New Territories offer small batches to neighbours. Commercial bagged compost from brands such as Floragard can be found at Brighten Floriculture on Flower Market Road and at larger branches of Dah Chong Hong. For container plants, mix 20–30% compost by volume into a standard potting medium.

Leaf mould, made from decomposed leaves of Liquidambar formosana (sweet gum) and Cinnamomum camphora (camphor tree) collected in country parks, is free and extremely effective—but it must be fully broken down. Gather fallen leaves in autumn, pile them in a shaded corner and leave them for at least twelve months. The result is a crumbly, moisture-holding material far superior to raw leaves, which can mat into a water-repellent layer.

Coconut coir, sold in compressed blocks at Brighten, Prince Edward shops and online retailers, provides an alternative for gardeners who want a peat-free product with good water retention. Rehydrate the block thoroughly before mixing. Coir has a neutral pH and excellent aeration, making it suitable for hanging baskets of Chlorophytum comosum (spider plant) or Epipremnum aureum (devil’s ivy) that dry out quickly on high-rise balconies.

When buying bagged manure, check the label for the words “composted” or “well-rotted”. Fresh chicken manure, sometimes sold cheaply at wet markets in Yuen Long, is far too strong and can burn roots overnight in Hong Kong’s warm, humid conditions.

Adjusting pH for Specific Plants

Many ornamentals commonly grown in Hong Kong—Rhododendron hybrids (azaleas), Camellia sasanqua, Gardenia jasminoides—insist on acidic soil with a pH between 5.0 and 6.5. If a pH test shows the planter mix has drifted above neutral due to hard water or cement dust, the simplest corrective is horticultural sulphur. This fine yellow powder, stocked by most Prince Edward shops, oxidises slowly and lowers pH over weeks. Apply 30–50 g per square metre, lightly scratch it into the surface and re-test after a month.

A quicker but shorter-lived fix is a liquid acidifier based on chelated iron, sold under brands such as Sequestrene at Brighten and other garden centres. Dilute according to the instructions and water it in fortnightly during the active growing season. This method suits container-grown Citrus × limon (lemon) and Citrus reticulata (mandarin) that show yellowing between the leaf veins—a classic symptom of pH-induced iron deficiency.

In the rare event that soil is excessively acidic (below pH 5.0), finely ground dolomite lime raises the pH gently and adds magnesium and calcium. A small bag goes a long way on a balcony; 100 g incorporated into the top 15 cm of a 40-cm-diameter pot will usually bring the reading up by half a point.

Drainage Amendments for Pots, Planters and Rooftops

Hong Kong’s intense rainstorms and regular typhoon downpours can waterlog a poorly drained container in minutes. The remedy is not simply adding stones to the bottom—a widespread practice that actually raises the perched water table inside the pot—but blending genuine drainage materials throughout the entire root zone.

Perlite, the white expanded volcanic glass, remains the most reliable choice. It is lightweight, inert and widely available at Wah King Garden Arts in Sai Kung, at Brighten and at smaller shops on Flower Market Road. For succulents like Echeveria cultivars and Sansevieria trifasciata, use a mix of 50% perlite and 50% standard potting soil. For general flowering annuals such as Bougainvillea glabra in large rooftop planters, 20–30% perlite by volume maintains the open structure these plants demand.

Coarse horticultural sand (not fine building sand, which clogs pores) is an alternative where weight is needed to stabilise tall specimens in windy exposed sites. Look for “sharp sand” or “washed river sand” at Bun Kee Garden Supplies in Fanling. Mix it at up to one-third by volume for deep planters containing deep-rooted shrubs.

Vermiculite holds more water than perlite and suits moisture-loving plants such as Alocasia macrorrhizos (elephant’s ear) and ferns on shaded balconies. However, it collapses over time and should be renewed every growing season. This is easily done when the entire container is repotted after the summer heat subsides in October.

Biochar and Other Specialised Products

Biochar has gained attention for its ability to retain nutrients, host beneficial microbes and resist breakdown for decades. In Hong Kong, small quantities of activated biochar are sold at Kadoorie Farm’s shop and occasionally at farmers’ markets such as the one at Island House in Tai Po. Incorporate it at 5–10% by volume into permanent beds or large planters, but pre-charge it by soaking the biochar in diluted worm compost tea or liquid seaweed for a week before use. Raw biochar will initially absorb nutrients from the surrounding soil, temporarily starving plants.

Zeolite, a natural volcanic mineral, is another product appearing in specialist outlets. It traps ammonium ions and releases them slowly, making it useful in heavily leached sandy soils such as those found on Cheung Chau and Lantau’s coastal terraces. Add a handful per square metre when preparing the bed, but remember it does nothing for soil structure on its own. Treat zeolite as a targeted nutrient sponge, not a broad amendment.

Ignore any product labelled “soil improver” unless the ingredients list reveals the actual material. Some cheap mixtures sold in local hardware shops contain little more than dyed sawdust and a trace of urea, contributing neither tilth nor lasting fertility.

Soil Amendments That Rarely Work in Hong Kong

Gardeners moving from temperate climates sometimes bring expectations that fail in the subtropics. Gypsum, for instance, is often recommended to break up heavy clay, but it only works on sodium-rich sodic soils, which are virtually absent in Hong Kong. The territory’s clays are typically kaolinitic and respond far better to compost than to calcium sulphate.

Peat moss, while effective at acidifying and holding water, is increasingly discouraged for environmental reasons and because it can become hydrophobic when it dries out completely—a common event on exposed balconies during the northeast monsoon. Coir reliably performs the same role without the water-repellent dry crust.

Water-retaining polymer crystals, sold under various brand names, absorb huge volumes of water but often turn into a slimy mess in Hong Kong’s humidity. They are unlikely to harm plants in the short term, yet they provide no nutrition and give gardeners a false sense of security. It is far better to improve the soil’s natural water-holding capacity with compost and coir than to rely on synthetic gels.

A Practical Recipe for Hong Kong Planters

For a standard 50-litre balcony pot growing a mixed display of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Chinese hibiscus), Lantana camara and a few seasonal herbs, try a blend that has proved reliable in the region: 40% good-quality bagged potting soil from a Flower Market shop, 30% mature compost, 20% perlite and 10% coconut coir. Add 15 g of dolomite lime if the pH starts below 5.8, and incorporate a tablespoon of slow-release fertiliser granules coated with resin rather than a quick-acting powder that will wash away in the first summer thunderstorm.

The exact ratios will vary with exposure, plant choice and watering habits, but the principle remains: every amendment must serve a verifiable purpose—opening structure, adjusting pH, sustaining microbial life—that matches the specific soil on your balcony, roof or patch of ground.


Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden’s compost production is more than a sideline—it represents one of the territory’s few large-scale, controlled decomposition systems. The facility processes roughly 200 tonnes of green waste annually, using a hot-composting method that maintains internal temperatures above 60°C for several consecutive days. This heat kills weed seeds, pathogens and nematodes that would survive in cooler home piles. The finished product, sold in 20-litre bags at the Farm’s shop in Lam Tsuen, has a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio consistently measured at 12:1, ideal for vegetable beds and ornamental borders in Hong Kong’s humid climate. A visit to the composting site reveals the practical details: windrows are turned mechanically every three days by a tractor-mounted auger, moisture content is checked by hand-gripping a handful of material, and the entire cycle from fresh clippings to dark, earthy compost takes just eight weeks during summer. Gardeners who cannot travel to Tai Po can order delivery through Kadoorie’s online portal, though demand often outstrips supply during the March–May planting rush.

Home composting in Hong Kong faces specific challenges: limited space, vermin concerns in high-density buildings and the need to balance wet kitchen scraps with dry carbon materials. A 60-litre Bokashi bin placed on a service balcony handles cooked food waste without odour, fermenting it into a liquid that can be diluted and used as a soil drench for Schefflera arboricola (dwarf umbrella tree) or Ficus elastica (rubber plant).

The Farm’s horticultural team has documented that compost from Delonix regia (flame tree) leaf drop, abundant in country parks during spring, contains notably higher potassium levels than compost made from mixed garden prunings. This matters for flowering plants: Bougainvillea glabra and Rhododendron hybrids respond to the extra potash with deeper bloom colour and extended flowering periods. Collecting flame tree leaves requires permission from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department if done in designated country park areas, though fallen foliage on public pavements is fair game under current regulations. Shred the leaves with a hand-operated chipper before adding to a home pile, as the waxy leaflets resist breakdown when left whole.
